2ND ANNUAL ST. JOHNS OPTIMIST
DINGY GREEN FLEET REGATTA
John H. Fewell, IV, grandson of past Commodore John H. Fewell, Jr. won the 2nd annual St. Johns Optimist Dingy Green Fleet Regatta held over the weekend of July 14-15, 2007. Johnny sailed a consistent seven race series with two firsts, two seconds and two thirds for a total of 12 points after one throw-out. Michael Pentaleri finished second with 14 points, and Kyle Runnfeldt finished third with 18 points. A total of 17 junior boy and girl sailors from the Florida Yacht Club, Epping Forest, Rudder Club and Halifax Yacht Club participated in the event.
The “green fleet” is a special division of the Optimist Pram class that is designed for entry-level sailors born on or after January 1, 1992. This is an excellent way for beginners to learn racing skills in a forgiving dingy that is sailed in approximately 110 countries by over 150,000 youngsters. “The Optimist is, quite simply, the dingy in which the young people of the world learn to sail.” Check-out [optiworld.org]. Special thanks go to our sponsor Tom Bush BMW of Orange Park for supporting and making this regatta possible. Many thanks also to Chairman Don Wansor for planning and administering this event.
